The Swamp Cat (2)

By Shuke Wang

Chapter 2

Jake lifted his head unconsciously. Then his eyes cleared out the dust.

“Jake, are you there?” It was Shari.

“Where were you?” Jake asked annoyed. “I was dead worried you know? You’re dangerous.”

“Huh?” Shari smirked. “Don’t you mean that I saved your life? You could have died you idiot! I mean like, a self-conscious boy lying in quicksand waiting to die.” Shari smirked again. Jake felt something cold against his hand. The necklace he thought. He just raised it and held it up to the setting sunlight. Shari just stared. Suddenly, it felt like the air was too stuffy, and Jake just stared intensely at the necklace. It was until then, he realized how beautiful the necklace was. It had a blue misty gem attached to a silver moon. Its rays gleamed in the sunlight and it kept getting stuffier in the air. There was another shape on the right side of the moon and it took Jake awhile to realize that it was the letter “s”. It dangled gently undrapping its silver chain on Jakes’ hand. Slowly, Jake put it back in to his pocket and he beamed. Shari was surely jealous.

“I’m going swimming.” Jake muttered and stalked home in his muddy jeans.
